One great way to spend an morning or afternoon in Bangkok is to take the Chao Phraya Express along its entire run. The Express is riverboat company that provides transportation along the Chao Phraya River. It is probably the quickest and easiest way to travel if you need to go in the same direction as the River. A number of major temples, restaurants, and shopping malls are situated on the Chao Phraya River. As I recall, it cost about 30 cents to travel the full length of the Express run. Every few stops, a conductor would check your ticket to make sure you had the right one. Along the River are the major Bangkok hotels but you will also see more humble dwellings. I have always been impressed by the architecture of the high rises along the river; they are visually very attractive, as you can see from the following photographs. The exterior of the buildings have a 'texture' whereas the buildings in the US all too often have flat exteriors.
