We have visited Ayutthaya may times and it remains one of our favorite places in Thailand. It is only about an hours drive north of Bangkok. We will typically spend several days there and always stay at the Krungsri River Hotel. It is not a luxury hotel and the room are a bit on the small side. But what really attracts us is that the hotel has an outdoor restaurant that sits right next to the river. We have had countless romantic dinners watching the barges and rice boats going up and down the river. The restaurant has outstanding food and the extensive menu has a entire page devoted to fish dishes made with river fish. The last time we ate there, we ate a whole serpent head fish. It was outstanding. Most of the fish dishes in Thailand are prepared with entire fish, including the head. Ayutthaya is also known for its green curry with fish balls.
